Gerber Gerber Guard Overlaminate
Gerber Guard 15” Punched Color 10 Yard 50 Yard Clear P61385A P61386A
Not intended for printing. Gerber Guard is designed to provide additional protection from petroleum-based or other chemicals, as well as increased abrasion resistance due to exposure to severe handling conditions. Gerber Guard’s glossy characteristic creates a more lustrous finish when applied to Gerber EDGE-produced graphics. May also be used on unprinted vinyl film with the same quality results.

Gerber Guard™ Protective Overlaminate
manufactured by 3M
DESCRIPTION
Gerber Guard™ is a 3-mil, glossy overlaminate custom formulated for Gerber by 3M. It has
been designed to enhance the petrochemical and abrasion resistance of graphics (and their
print substrates) produced with the GERBER EDGE®, GERBER EDGE 2®, and GERBER
EDGE FX™ thermal transfer printing systems, in conjunction with GerberColor Foils. It can
also be used with unprinted film.
INTENDED APPLICATIONS
Graphics that will be applied in areas likely to have petrochemical contact will benefit from the
application of Gerber Guard.
Graphics that have been laminated with Gerber Guard can be applied to flat surfaces or flat
surfaces with rivets. Gerber Guard is not recommended for use on corrugated or highly irregular
surfaces.
For information on further protecting graphics from ultraviolet light, refer to the Gerber UVGuard
Product Bulletin (OL-GerbUV).
APPLICATION TECHNIQUES
The following procedure is recommended when using Gerber Guard for a chemical resistant
application:
1. Create job with print and cut.
2. Create decal cut around entire job that is 1/8 inch wider than graphic.
3. Output all.
4. Print and cut job, weed (remove decal cut outline) leaving bulls eye visible.

5. Exit Quick Plot.
6. Select the decal cut and a non-cut print element in the job.
7. Output selected.
8. Apply overlaminate over entire job without anything cut out using a cold roll laminator
or by hand.
9. Place in plotter and line up cut registration.
10. Press F8 (to cut job). This will cut the Gerber Guard with a 1/8 inch overlap that will
protect the graphic. Weed away Gerber Guard.
The following application procedure is recommended when using Gerber Guard for abrasion
resistance:
1. Print graphics.
2. Remove printed graphics.
3. Using a cold roll laminator, or by hand, apply Gerber Guard over the printed graphic.
4. Load laminated graphic into the plotter and line up the cut registration mark using the
“bomb sight”.
5. Set the tool force one division higher than what usually would be used for the base
film selected. For example, if normal cut setting for Gerber HP 220 film is at 1.5 on
the dial head, use 2.5. (A test cut should be performed to determine the ideal tool
force setting.)
6. Cut and weed graphic as normal.
This film will not significantly affect the U.V. durability ratings of the base films it is applied to.
For durability information, refer to the Product Bulletin for the specific base film.
CUTTING
A graphic that has been laminated with Gerber Guard can be cut using any 15-inch EDGEcompatible sprocketed plotter.
GS-15 plotters or similar plotters can be set to full speed. HS-15 and HS-15plus plotters
should be set to 75%.
A test cut should be performed to determine the ideal tool force setting.
SHELF LIFE AND STORAGE
Apply film within one year of receipt. Gerber Guard should be stored in a clean area free from
excessive moisture. Maintain temperature at less than 70F (21C).
MAINTENANCE
Clean the face of Gerber Guard with a mild, non-abrasive soap with a soft cloth or sponge.
Avoid soaps containing grit or abrasives.
