DESCRIPTION
GerberColor™ Special Effects Series Flood Coat White (GCX-010) Foil is a durable, resinbased pigmented foil designed for use with the GERBER EDGE®, GERBER EDGE 2®, and
GERBER EDGE FX thermal transfer printing systems, in conjunction with EDGE READY™
materials. Flood Coat White features an extra-heavy pigment construction that allows a highly
opaque white foil to be applied in a single pass.

INTENDED APPLICATIONS
As its name suggests, this foil has been designed primarily for flood coating reverse-printed
graphics on clear films. The user must determine the suitability of Flood Coat White for all other
application such as text and small shape printing, or electrically illuminated backlit signs.
Most materials that this foil would be printed on are not intended for use where they may be
exposed to petrochemical spillage. If petrochemical contact is anticipated, refer to the section
below on protecting graphics. The user must determine the suitability of applications to all final
substrates.
PERFORMANCE LIFE
Flood Coat White has an expected outdoor durability of up to four years when applied vertically.
Due to the heavy pigment construction of this white foil, chalking may result in certain outdoor
applications. To reduce the potential of chalking, we recommend the use of GerberColor

Abrasion Guard™ SPF (GCF-214) or Matte Clear (GCF-334) Foils as an overprint for exterior
applications where the printed foil is in direct contact with outdoor conditions.
Note: Durability statement is based on accelerated aging using solid fill prints. Actual durability may vary. Substrate selection,
exposure angle, environmental conditions, and maintenance of markings will affect actual performance. Continuous exposure in
regions that experience maximum sunny days will result in decreased performance. This product is not recommended for horizontal
applications. Due to the extra thickness of the Flood Coat White pigment, contact with abrasive surfaces or high-tack tapes, such as
cellophane tapes, may split or lift the top portion of the printed image.
SHELF LIFE AND STORAGE
As a result of the extra-heavy pigment construction and special chemistry used to achieve Flood
Coat White’s high opacity an effect called “handle flake” may be encountered. This effect, a
flaking of foil off its polyester liner, is evident when the foil is not under tension and the
cassette is handled roughly. To minimize the effect of handle flake, we recommend that this foil
be handled gently and stored under tension using the original packaging materials including the
round foam core locks.
Shelf life of GerberColor Foils is one year. GerberColor Foils, film, and printed graphics (with or
without premask) should be kept in a clean area free from excessive moisture and direct
sunlight. Store foils at 40ºF to 90ºF (4ºC to 32ºC) and 40% to 60% humidity. When not in use,
cartridges should be kept in their package sleeves.
PRINTING
This foil has been designed primarily for flood coating reverse-printed graphics onto clear films.
In this manner EDGE® Series printer owners should apply the foil as the final overprint color on
top of other printed colors. Flood Coat White should be applied in large areas, or full printing
width and not applied as shapes or text of any size.
Flood Coat White is compatible as the overlayer in overprint combinations with the following
GerberColor Series: GerberColor Spot (GCS), GerberColor Process Pro™ CMYK (GCP), and
GerberColor Transparent (GCT) Series Foils.
GerberColor Spectratone™ matches, fine lines, halftones, text and shapes printed close
together are not recommended. Text of any size or irregular shape printing may result in overtransfer or bridging in areas that are not intended to be printed. Flaking can result where the
over-transferred portion of the graphic encounters the squeegees located on the EDGE. The
flakes are difficult to remove from the EDGE and may affect subsequent printing.
Overtransferred foil can be removed by applying standard tack application tape to the
overtransferred area, then removing the tape. (Printed graphics should be allowed to cure for 15
minutes before the application of transfer tape.)
GerberColor Flood Coat White (GCX-010) is not a substitute for GerberColor Spot or Arctic
White (GCS-10 or GCS-710). For small text printing, halftone blends and fades, detailed primer
applications, detailed underlayer printing and Spectratone applications, use GerberColor Spot or
Arctic White.
Recommended working environment is as follows:
 Operating temperature: 50ºF to 95ºF / 10ºC to 35ºC
 Recommended temperature for assured printing accuracy: 68ºF to 78ºF / 20ºC to 26ºC
 Operating humidity: 20% to 90% relative humidity, non-condensing (maximum range;
actual range varies by material used)

As of the release of this bulletin, Flood Coat White is compatible with all EDGE READY
materials except EDGE Positive™, Heat Transfer Paper, and GerberVision™ manufactured by
3M. Lot to lot variations can produce slight visual differences in color output.
Due to the potential of “handle flake” – see Shelf Life and Storage Section below — user should
follow standard EDGE maintenance instructions for the cleaning of the head, squeegees and
sprockets after using Flood Coat White.
PROTECTING GRAPHICS
Gerber Technology offers products that are designed to protect vinyl and printed graphics.
Gerber Guard manufactured by 3M is a durable, dimensionally stable, glossy vinyl
overlaminate. This film has a petrochemical-resistant construction and is intended to be used
when markings may be exposed to petrochemical spillage and/or severe handling conditions.
Gerber UVGuard™ is a custom-formulated, 1-mil, clear, TEDLAR polyvinyl fluoride (PVF)
laminating film designed to further expand the resistance to weathering of printed graphics up to
five years.
Gerber UVGuard™ 9 manufactured by 3M is a 2-mil, glossy, clear, mildew-resistant, polyvinyl
fluoride laminating film with a petrochemical-resistant adhesive system. It is designed to further
expand the resistance to weathering of printed graphics up to nine years. Gerber UVGuard 9
has the highest protection from UV fade.
Gerber StrikeGuard™ is an 8.0-mil, clear, glossy overlaminate film designed for a variety of
applications. This heavy-duty overlaminate film is ideal for the protection of graphics, up to two
years, and is especially beneficial where printed graphics experience severe handling and
forceful impact. Gerber StrikeGuard is not recommended in applications that require
petrochemical protection or where additional UV or vandal resistance is desired.
Abrasion Guard™ SPF (Sign Protection Formula) is a clear, top-coat GerberColor Finishing
Series (GCF) Foil designed for use with EDGE® Series thermal transfer printing systems, to
protect graphics from moderate contact and exposure to harmful effects of UV rays. It has an
expected performance life of five years (when printed by itself). When applied as a protective
overprint on other GerberColor Foils, Abrasion Guard SPF will extend the life of the base color
by up to 30%.
Matte Clear is a clear matte finish, top coat GerberColor Foil designed for use with EDGE®
Series thermal transfer printing systems, to reduce glare and protect graphics from moderate
contact or handling. It has an expected performance life of three years.
APPLICATION TECHNIQUES
Gerber standard tack application tape is required for all graphics produced with EDGE® Series
thermal transfer printing systems. Printed graphics should be allowed to cure for 15 minutes
before the application of transfer tape.
MAINTENANCE
To clean printed graphics, use a mild, non-abrasive soap with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid
using alcohol-based cleansers or soaps containing grit or abrasives.
